Eye and Vision Exams

Your vision is one of your most precious commodities. Whether you have always seen well or have had a few issues here and there, it is important not to take it for granted. That is why everyone needs to get eye exams from time to time. Most people think of eye exams and vision exams as the same thing, but many things are checked during a comprehensive eye exam that may not be addressed in a simple vision exam. During an eye exam, our optometrist looks closely not only at your eyes but also considers your medical history and family history when checking for signs of visual degradation. At Yardley Vision Care, we have been conducting eye and vision exams for residents of Yardley, PA for many years.

Components of an Eye and Vision Exam

There are three main components to an eye and vision exam: vision testing, eye function testing, and an eye health evaluation. All three of these aspects are equally important.

Vision Testing: Vision testing identifies various refractive errors, such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism to determine what adjustments need to be made to help you see as clearly as possible. Our optometrist will get a general idea of your visual acuity by using wall charts and then fine-tune your prescription with various tools. This test is what tells you if you need eyeglasses or contacts.

Eye Function Testing: Eye function involves things such as color vision, depth perception, peripheral vision, eye muscle capabilities, and the way your eyes respond to light. It also identifies if you have eye focus issues or if you have trouble getting your eyes to work together as a team. This part of the eye exam can detect various underlying conditions that may be treatable with vision correction or eye exercises.

Eye Health: Although those with a history of vision problems tend to have a higher risk of developing eye health problems, these issues can arise in any patient. Our optometrist can identify the early signs of conditions like diabetic retinopathy, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration, all of which can lead to blindness if left untreated. We can also check for less serious conditions like dry eye or conjunctivitis that may need treatment as well.
